The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
