The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
