He has committed acts countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently research forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – genuinely, no former commander would have imagined – independently wrecking major areas of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of multiple the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which have business with the government.

As bewildering as it is to witness the chief executive attempt to overturn the established notion regarding democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense about him since they are non-believers or agnostics or spiritual independents. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to turn the other cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to instruct the assailant; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and straightforward reality that the Jesus of the gospels requests a type of profound affection concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christianity something of a controversial faith: engaging for the populace, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Highest Within Us
So I have been heartened to observe the determined opposition against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired voters to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the best parts of American history.
